Performing and Visual Arts Grants
NSU offers financial assistance to musicians in the form of Performing and Visual Arts Grants. These grants are available to musicians who have reached a desirable level of proficiency as demonstrated by an audition.
For the forthcoming inaugural year of 2007-2008, performance grants are available for those proficient in the following instruments:
| Strings: | Winds: | Brass: | Percussion: |
| Violin Viola Cello Contrabass |
Flute Piccolo Oboe Clarinets (Bb) Bassoon |
French horn Trumpet Trombone Tuba |
Tympani Mallets Unpitched percussion |
Performing and Visual Arts Grants are renewable annually.
An additional audition at the start of each semester will determine placement in the orchestra or NSU Sharkestra Pep Band. Students will sign a contract in acceptance of the scholarship funds that specify expectations and obligations for orchestra or NSU Pep Band membership. These include dedication to practice, preparation for rehearsals, attendance at rehearsals and concerts, maintaining good academic standing, continued progress toward a degree, proper decorum, and other stipulations as determined.
Students are expected to own their instruments.
How to arrange for an audition
For an audition and consideration for the Performing and Visual Arts Grant, prospective orchestra and NSU Pep Band members may apply via email to Mark Cavanaugh, Ph.D., or submit this application.
Prepare a short piece (3-5 minutes) of your own choosing that displays your best playing and includes some contrast (fast/technical as well as slow/lyrical). In addition, you will be asked to sight-read a piece from the upcoming repertoire and possibly play some scales.
Those who live at a considerable distance may arrange an audition via videotape or DVD.
Academic credit
In addition to preparing and performing works for the orchestra and/or NSU Pep Band, students may also be expected to enroll in music-related academic coursework. Relevant courses currently in the NSU undergraduate student catalog include:
ARTS 1500 Music Through History
HUMN 2600 Introduction to American Studies
