Student Financial Success

Scholarships

Due to federal and state aid programs providing a limited amount of funding, many students seek scholarships to supplement financial aid packages.

The two main types of scholarships are need-based and merit/performance-based. Need-based scholarships are awarded to students who show financial need according to the information provided to the school from the FAFSA. Merit/performance-based scholarships are granted to students who meet certain grade or test score requirements, or participate in athletic or performing arts programs.

Many schools, including NSU, offer various institutional scholarships that grant funds directly from the school. Many private scholarships offered by outside organizations are also available with a wide range of criteria and qualifications.

When searching for scholarships:

  1. Check for deadlines. All scholarships have strict deadlines that students must meet.
  2. Review requirements. All scholarships have specific requirements that students must meet.
  3. Know who to contact. Each scholarship offered by the school and outside organizations has specific contacts that vary from fund to fund. Pay close attention to this information during your search.
  4. Follow directions. Many funds have specific directions that students need to follow during the application process, including essays, letters of recommendation, etc. Students who do not follow these guidelines are often automatically disqualified from that opportunity.
