Digressions Magazine

Digressions is the student-run literary magazine sponsored by the Division of Humanities. Students are encouraged to submit original works of poetry, short fiction, artwork and photography for consideration in the magazine, which is published yearly in the winter semester.

Performing and Visual Arts

The Division of Humanities in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences presents theatre, dance, music, and other artistic productions to complement academic majors and courses.
Master of Arts in Writing

Curriculum Requirements

The master of arts degree in writing gives students a background in both professional and creative writing, as it allows students to further develop the writing skills that they acquired as undergraduate students and to develop specialized writing skills such as business, technical, and journalistic writing. An M.A. in writing prepares students for careers in publishing, education, public relations, and advertising, as well as for careers as professional writers for magazines, newspapers, and businesses.

Master of Arts in Writing Learning Outcomes

The successful M.A. in writing graduate is expected to:

  • Write in multiple genres for diverse audiences using professional-level conventions;
  • Create texts employing professional-level rhetorical strategies;
  • Conduct professional-level research;
  • Produce a master’s thesis of publishable quality.

Master of Arts in Writing Curriculum

Students must complete four required courses (12 credits), four elective courses (12 credits), and 6 credits of a Master’s Thesis for a total of 30 credits.
