Digressions Magazine

Digressions is the student-run literary magazine sponsored by the Division of Humanities. Students are encouraged to submit original works of poetry, short fiction, artwork and photography for consideration in the magazine, which is published yearly in the winter semester.

The theatre program at NSU offers an extremely low student-faculty ratio with professors who have a wide variety of backgrounds and academic/research expertise. Each theatre student will have the advantage of individual attention from faculty on coursework and advice on life after undergraduate studies at NSU. Students have an outstanding opportunity to learn and excel in this supportive yet challenging environment. Theatre majors may also select from a number of minors offered by the college.

Description

The theatre major at NSU takes a broad approach, giving students a varied background in the discipline of theatre. Students will learn how to communicate effectively, identify the historical periods and styles of theatre, demonstrate knowledge of and skill in aspects of technical theatre, such as costuming, lighting, set design and construction, demonstrate skill in public performance, direct theatrical scenes or productions, and understand the role of drama in culture. A theatre major prepares students for a wide variety of careers in professional theatre, education, television, and broadcast journalism.

The theatre major is offered during the day and evening on NSU’s main campus.

Learning Outcomes

A successful theatre graduate is expected to:

  1. Identify the historical, cultural, and stylistic aspects of theatre;
  2. Exhibit skill in technical theatre and design;
  3. Display performance skills in theatrical productions;
  4. Direct theatrical scenes or productions.

Career Opportunities

Many career possibilities await theatre majors because the confidence and communication skills required for a theatre degree is valuable preparation for nearly any field.
