Some students do not decide on a program of study or a career path to follow until after they enter college, and many change their minds more than once during their undergraduate years. If you're undecided about a major field of study, NSU's faculty and staff can help you through the process of choosing a career path and selecting an appropriate program. Use your first few semesters to explore options. Investigate potential majors with professors in various departments. Select courses that fulfill general education requirements and introduce you to majors that interest you. Visit the Office of Academic Advising to learn about major requirements within each of your interested majors. Outside of your classes you can also become clearer about your strengths, interests, and skills through active participation in campus and community activities. Get involved! While you are deciding on a major, take advantage of programs that stimulate creative and intellectual discovery or that give you insight into the best career path for you. The college offers many programs that will open doors and help you learn about different disciplines and career options. As you start your academic career in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, plan to meet with your academic advisor each semester to discuss ideas and strategies for exploration. After the first year, start working with your advisor to narrow down your choices and set a time line for making a decision. Bear in mind that although the requirements of your major will direct your studies, the college's strong liberal arts education will help prepare you for a number of career options. As you proceed through the decision-making process, ask yourself specific questions: What are my interests? What are my career goals? What graduate degrees or certifications are required beyond the undergraduate degree in order to succeed in the careers that interest me? If you do not select a major during the admissions process, you will be considered enrolled in the deciding program. The deciding program is administered by the college's Division of Humanities. You must declare a major prior to reaching 60 cumulative credits, including non-NSU credits, generally by the end of your sophomore year. When you are ready to declare a major, fill out "Change of Major/Minor" or "Change of School" forms available at the Office of Academic Advising. Choosing a major is an exciting part of the college experience. Remember that your academic advisors are always here to help guide you throughout the process.
