“We teach in the jungle, we teach in the ocean, we teach all over the world. The world is our classroom, and we bring it to students both on campus and far beyond it. NSU gives us great latitude on creative and innovative ways of helping students learn and succeed. There’s a tremendous connection between teacher and student, and that makes for cutting-edge education.”

-Barry Baker
Professor of Environmental Science/Studies

What is Travel Study?

The Travel Study Program encompasses a broad range of international academic and cultural activities. Travel study can mean living in Paris for a year while studying French or art history. It might mean living aboard a ship in the Semester at Sea Program. Or it could be an archeological dig or conservation work in a rainforest.     Students who want to experience the Travel Study Program have a great variety of organized programs to choose from, as well as opportunities to create a program tailored to their unique academic and personal goals.

Why Travel Study?

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences is committed to providing undergraduate students with international study opportunities, the flexibility to earn college credit and receive financial assistance for travel study experiences, and the support necessary for students to plan and realize their own, individual travel goals.

Exploring other countries and cultures is one of the most fundamental and valuable educational opportunities students can pursue. Some students choose to participate in travel study trips to explore in-depth topics important to their majors. Others travel study to satisfy a curiosity about another culture, learn another language, and experience new and completely different things.

In the process, students may find out more about themselves. Travel study experiences may awaken curiosity about the world and allow students to look at their lives from different perspectives. They may develop more confidence in handling new situations--valuable experience for future professional and personal ventures. Students who travel study often cherish and draw from their international experience for years to come.
