How to Register for Classes

All students in their first year at NSU (freshmen and transfer students) must register for classes with their academic advisor. Continuing students can register online or with their academic advisor. To make an appointment, please call (954) 262-7990. New students also have the option of testing out of entry level courses by passing challenge exams. For more information, contact your academic advisor.

New Students

All new students are required to register for courses before attending orientation. You must make an appointment with your registration facilitator/academic advisor to register for courses so we can help you determine the appropriate courses for your first term. These appointments may be conducted in person or by telephone.  When you attend orientation, your registration will be finalized.

Our goal is to help students be successful! You can get a head start by:

  1. Activating your NSU Account
  2. Becoming familiar with the Student Catalog
  3. Reviewing the Course Wizard for course availability and scheduling

What Your Academic Advisor Can Do For You

  • Help you register, drop, or withdraw from classes.
  • Provide information about prerequisites for courses, standardized and placement tests, and academic preparation for pursuit of professional degrees.
  • Discuss career options.

What You Should Do

  • Bring a tentative class schedule with you when registering for courses with your academic advisor.
  • Learn which prerequisites you need to complete before taking upper-level courses.
  • Learn about admission requirements, including entrance exams, for professional or graduate programs that interest you.
  • Discuss your career goals and plans with your academic advisor.

Registration for classes each semester is the student's responsibility. Registration takes place three times each year, prior to each new semester. For exact dates, please review the calendars online.

Steps to Follow

  • Update your curriculum sheet each semester by entering your grades and the term in which you completed the course.
  • If you are not sure which classes are appropriate, ask your academic advisor to create/review your four-year planner, which suggests a recommended sequence of course enrollment.
  • Use the NSU catalog to check prerequisites for your course requirements. Ask your academic advisor for guidance in scheduling prerequisites.
  • It is essential that you know the course requirements for your degree. If you are not sure whether you are required to take a certain class, check the catalog and your curriculum sheet, or schedule an appointment with your academic advisor.
  • It is your responsibility to select, enroll in, and successfully complete all courses on the curriculum sheet for your specific degree.

Academic advisors are available throughout the semester. Please utilize this resource to understand your academic requirements and fulfill your personal responsibility for enrolling in the appropriate classes in the correct sequence.
