Frequently Asked Questions

The following information can be found in the Student Catalog, but for quick reference, here are the answers to 10 questions academic advisors are most often asked.

  • How, and where, do I register?
Your first registration must be done with an academic advisor. After that, you can register online through WebStar, except for students with holds and NSU employees, who must enroll with the assistance of an academic advisor.
  • What, and when, is the drop/add period?
The first two weeks of each term are the drop/add period, when students may add and drop courses. An academic advisor is required to process all transactions during this period. Students who add classes after they have started are responsible for all course requirements. During the second week, students may only drop classes. Students who intend to drop all courses for a semester must meet with their academic advisor to process the full drop.
  • When can I withdraw from a course?
After a semester's or term’s drop/add period, students may withdraw from a course with no financial refund or credit until the end of the week following the halfway point of the semester or term, depending on the course length. For exact dates, refer to the Academic Calendars.
  • How do I prepare for the semester if I am enrolled in online courses?
Students enrolled in an online course will be required to complete an orientation. You will become familiar with the tools you need to be successful. You will be given access to your online course in WebCT five days prior to the start of the term. On entering your course, you will need to earn 100% on a five-question quiz prior to accessing the course information.
  • What is a curriculum sheet?
The curriculum sheet is a list of the courses needed to complete your degree. It serves as your guide in registering for classes. All transfer credits are noted here. You need to add your grades to this form when you finish your courses so you can track your progress and determine which courses you still need to take.
  • What should I do if I have a hold on my account?
A hold on your account may prevent you from enrolling. You need to resolve any holds with the department that entered the hold.
  • How can I adjust my schedule after classes start?
Once a term starts, all schedule changes need to be made by an academic advisor. All requests for this must be submitted in writing, in person, or by fax. A phone call request is not sufficient.
  • Can I repeat a course?
Students may repeat a course to improve their GPA. If a course is taken more than once, only the better grade will be used in calculating the GPA. All grades, however, will appear on the student’s transcript. Students need to notify their academic advisor when a repeated course is finished because the computer does not update this information automatically.
  • How do I get an NSU email account?
You are required to have an NSU email address because all NSU business conducted via email must be sent through your NSU email address. If you need technical assistance, contact the NSU Help Desk at help@nova.edu or (954) 262-4357
  • What is my PIN Number?
You will receive your six digit number in the mail once you’ve been admitted. You need it, among other uses, to access your student records through WebStar. If you do not receive yours, you can contact the NSU Help Desk to have a new one issued. The Help Desk can be reached at (954) 262-4357 or help@nova.edu.
