Undergraduate Admissions

Admissions Requirements

First Year Students (Freshman)

Nova Southeastern University is committed to admitting individuals with the academic preparation necessary to succeed in NSU's challenging undergraduate program, and with the kind of dedication that will enrich the NSU community as a whole. We believe that the best admission decisions are made only after a thorough review of an applicant's file.

Bachelor's degree admission requires that students have completed high school or received a General Education Diploma (GED). Many factors are considered during the Admissions Committee's review process. Performance in high school will be the best indicator of how successful a student will be at NSU. The Committee will review high school transcripts, look at academic ability and strengths, the level of coursework taken, and performance on the SAT, ACT, or other standardized tests (Students interested in the evening adult program do not need to submit SAT/ACT scores). Involvement in activities and work experience will also be taken into consideration. Recommendations are optional.

NSU wants to make the application process as smooth as possible. Although personal interviews are not required, prospective students are encouraged to visit campus and meet with an admissions counselor.

Transfer Admissions Requirements

Nova Southeastern University welcomes applications from students transferring from other four-year colleges and universities and from regionally accredited two-year community colleges. NSU considers new students with a minimum of 24 semester hours of credit to be transfer students. New students with less than 24 semester hours of credit are considered freshman students.

NSU will accept a maximum of 90 semester credit hours (including coursework from two and four-year institutions, credit for CLEP, proficiency examinations, and prior learning) toward a bachelor's degree. The remaining credits must be earned at NSU. At least 50 percent of the credits in a student's major must be earned at NSU.

Nova Southeastern University has articulation agreements with Florida's community colleges. For financial aid purposes, students who have earned associate of arts degrees (1993 or later) at one of these colleges will enter NSU with junior standing.

New Student Skill Requirements

Before the first semester of enrollment, students are expected to demonstrate skills necessary for college-level work. Students without appropriate SAT/ACT scores or prerequisites for college-level math and/or English will be placed in fundamental courses. Students also have the opportunity prior to their first registration to complete a challenge exam in reading, writing, and mathematics. Based on their scores, they will be advised on appropriate course selection. The passing of placement tests is a prerequisite to enrollment in some courses, including all initial mathematics and written communication courses.

Students who need further skill development will be informed about resources available for assistance.   They will be limited to registering for courses approved by an adviser - generally at the 1000 and 2000 levels - until they have acquired the skills necessary to advance.
