DSST Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)

The DSST program is a nationally-recognized testing program that gives students the opportunity to receive college credit for learning acquired outside of the traditional college classroom. Students who pass DSST exams can earn college credits for what they have learned through work experiences and individual study. Additionally, students may continue their studies at an advanced level instead of repeating familiar material.

There are no prerequisites required to take DSST exams. However, because requirements differ from college to college, please check with the Office of Admissions or your academic adviser before taking any tests. NSU set its own DSST policy regarding scores, credits awarded, and applicable courses. Students must contact their academic advisor before attempting DSST exams. Although DSST exams are untimed, the average completion time is 90 minutes.

Fact Sheets

For each test, a fact sheet lists:

  • topics covered
  • sample questions
  • books recommended as useful for review
  • number of credits awarded for a passing score as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE). Please note that some schools require scores that are higher than the minimum recommended passing score. It is suggested that you check with school officials to determine what score is required in order to earn credit.

Fact sheets are available via download at www.getcollegecredit.com.

Exam Fees

$70 per exam payable to DSST by credit card only.
$15 service fee per test administration payable to NSU by check or money order), if registering to take the test at NSU main campus.

Test Day

A valid photo ID is required (NSU student ID, driver's license, or passport) to take the exam.

DSST Test Information

Beginning October 1, 2006, DSST exams will be administered as an IBT (Internet-Based Test) on a computer. Each exam is two hours long and made up primarily of multiple-choice questions.  Score reports are available immediately and are printed for the student upon completion of the exam.

DSST exams are administered Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. only. To make an appointment for the DSST exam, contact Testing Services in the Office of Academic Services at (954) 262-8374.

Testing Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

If you have a disability as prescribed by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and require special testing services or arrangements, please contact the test administrator at the test site. You will be asked to submit to the test administrator documentation of your disability and your request for special accommodations. Please submit your request as far in advance of your test date as possible so that the necessary accommodations can be made. Only test takers with documented disabilities are eligible.
