Humanities

Digressions Magazine

Digressions is the student-run literary magazine sponsored by the Division of Humanities. Students are encouraged to submit original works of poetry, short fiction, artwork and photography for consideration in the magazine, which is published yearly in the winter semester.

Performing and Visual Arts

The Division of Humanities in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences presents theatre, dance, music, and other artistic productions to complement academic majors and courses.

English Major

The English program at NSU offers an extremely low student-faculty ratio with professors who have a wide variety of backgrounds and academic/research expertise. Some of the unique English courses that have been offered in the NSU division of humanities include: Literature and Medicine, Studies in Detective Fiction, and King Arthur.

Description

The English major is designed to provide students with a background in British, American, and world literatures, literary criticism and theory, popular culture, and rhetoric and composition. Students in this major will develop critical thinking, close reading, and analytical and creative writing skills. An English major prepares students for a wide variety of careers in such fields as education, publishing, law, business, and government.

The English major is offered during the day and evening on NSU’s main campus.

Learning Outcomes

A successful English graduate is expected to:

  1. Produce written arguments about literary texts;
  2. Identify literary periods, authors, and genres;
  3. Analyze literary texts as creative expressions, and historical and cultural artifacts.

Dual Admission Option

Please refer to Dual Admissions Web site for additional information.

Career Opportunities

Many career possibilities exist for English majors because an English degree is valuable preparation for any field in which precise understanding of ideas and effective communication are important. In contrast to training for some careers tied to current trends, an English major never goes out of style. There will always be a need for individuals who can write well and who can understand the conventions and complexities of the English language.

Some fields in which English majors find jobs include:

  • Advertising
  • Publishing
  • Public relations
  • Technical writing
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Government agencies
  • Web site production
  • Education
  • Law

The successful English graduate can confidently pursue graduate school or seek certification to become a secondary school teacher, a process supported by NSU's education department and Broward County's alternative certification program.
